The Supermarine Spitfire is probably the most beautiful fighter which ever rose in the sky. The first flight of R.J.Michell’s masterpiece took place in March 1936 and the “Spit” proved immediately as the ideal aircraft to hold their own against the previously unbeaten German Luftwaffe. Driven by the powerful Rolls-Royce Merlin V12 engine, the Spitfire was almost 600km fast and also had an excellent maneuverability which was of immense importance at the then so-called “Dogfights” or curve battles. These strengths made the Spitfire an ideal tool during fierce aerial fights over southern England and the English Channel in the cloudy summers of 1940. The Spitfire was a symbol of “The few”, so-called by Winston Churchill, in the Battle of Britain. It asserted itself in the struggle for air superiority over England and thus acquired its historical place in history.
